Ettenheim’s innovative teaching idea, “Patterns of the World,” is a visual art class that explores art and computer science through sewing and embroidery, combining digital and analog worlds. Ettenheim plans to purchase Turtlestitch, a browser-based programming language, that students can use to code and interpret traditional patterns from their own cultural backgrounds and cultures. The project also involves the students collaborating in real time with professional artists and student groups in the United States and from around the world through the new software. The student-created works will become physical artifacts that are coded, produced and sewn.
