Ricks’ innovative teaching idea, “SFJH Innovation Fair and Passport Program,” involves expanding The Innovation Center at South Fremont Junior High, a multi-room learning space that fosters creativity, collaboration and hands-on learning through tech clubs, e-sports, a makerspace class and self-directed student projects. The Voya grant will expand the Innovation Center’s reach by extending after-school access, launching a schoolwide Innovation Passport program and hosting a STEAM Innovation Fair. Students will earn rewards for completing projects, mentoring peers and demonstrating resilience.
