Maryann Markou

Markou’s innovative teaching program, “Pieces of Us,” is a school-wide ceramic mural project designed to foster belonging, student voice and community. Through the program, every student will create an individual clay piece representing their identity or experiences. While designs are unique, all pieces will be glazed in a unified palette to form a cohesive mural symbolizing connection and diversity. The project integrates art with social-emotional learning and character education, encouraging reflection and inclusion. In an effort to also build leadership skills, advanced students will lead production and mentor peers. The Voya grant will support the purchase of high-fire clay, a kiln capable of high temperatures, a slab roller, glazes and tools to ensure durability and long-term impact.
