Marisa Hanrahan
Hanrahan’s creative educational idea, “Pottery for Mental Health and Well-Being,” is a school-based initiative designed to support the social, emotional and mental health of elementary students through hands-on, creative clay experiences. Serving nearly 400 students across two schools, the project integrates pottery as a therapeutic, sensory-rich activity that promotes self-regulation, emotional expression, focus and stress reduction. According to Hanrahan, clay work is inherently grounding and bilateral, making it especially supportive for young learners with anxiety, sensory needs or emotional challenges. This initiative complements existing yoga and mindfulness programming, offering students a new and accessible coping strategy while fostering creativity, confidence and engagement in school. Overall, the project emphasizes early intervention, holistic wellness and equitable access to the arts for all students. The Voya grant will be used to supplement the project by covering costs associated with the traveling pottery experience, including materials, artist facilitation fees and set-up supplies.
