Lorenz’s innovative teaching idea, “Feathers to Framework,” allows students to investigate heredity by examining feather traits and interpreting DNA data. Working in small teams, they will predict inheritance patterns and compare their hypotheses with molecular evidence, transforming genetics from memorization into scientific investigation. According to Lorenz, birds provide an ideal model because traits such as feather color and egg color are easily observed, helping students connect visible characteristics with the genetic mechanisms behind them. The project was previously recognized as a finalist for the Christa McAuliffe Sabbatical Award in New Hampshire, highlighting its potential to expand innovative science learning. By linking observable biology with DNA analysis, Lorenz hopes students will build deeper conceptual understanding while developing confidence in their ability to think like scientists. The Voya grant will be used to purchase DNA investigation equipment, tests and workbooks.
