Chastain’s creative teaching idea, “Start Strong: An Equity-Based Beginner Band System,” is an equity-based system designed to ensure all students begin their musical journey with the tools and support needed for success. According to Chastain, many beginner band students face barriers such as limited access to materials, inconsistent organization and insufficient early instruction. Additionally, many school-owned instruments require repair, limiting equitable access for students who rely on them. This project addresses these challenges by providing organized student binders, access to essential materials and repaired instruments, and targeted instruction from professional clinicians. Chastain believes by removing financial and instructional barriers, this system increases engagement, improves performance outcomes and supports retention into future ensembles while offering a replicable model for beginner success. The Union Grove Middle School band program serves more than 250 students and is one of the largest band programs in Henry County. Chastain says the Voya grant will be used to purchase a full set of method books for a 6th grade beginning band class since it serves as the foundation of the curriculum.
