Ashton Deems

Deems’ innovative teaching idea, “Mission to NASA,” is a hands-on, project-based science project designed to inspire students by connecting classroom learning to real world space exploration. The goal of the project is to increase student engagement, motivation and understanding of science by giving them the opportunity to explore concepts related to space, engineering and physics, while working toward a potential educational experience connected to NASA. According to Deems, students will participate in interactive lessons and projects that build excitement around science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and expose them to opportunities they may not otherwise have access to, especially in a lower-income community-based setting. The Voya grant will be used to purchase foundational materials for the project including rocket kits, building materials, basic scientific tools and classroom supplies.
