Barrett’s and Kellogg’s innovative teaching idea, “Breakfast Before Books (3B),” is a reading literacy pilot program proposed for the 2021 school year targeting middle school students with the greatest need for literacy intervention. 3B is based on the Transnational Literature Circles (TLC) method whereby participants clarify ideas and negotiate meaning from the shared text. Research shows reading comprehension increases when ideas from text are applied to real-life situations. Additionally, the teachers hope the students will become better able to comprehend stories and increase their reading fluency when literacy behaviors are practiced during adult/child reading. The TLC method includes meetings, a performance project, and guest readers, visitors, and speakers.
