Martell’s winning project, “ASTRO: Student Space Research,” involves ASTRO, the Authentic Student Telescope Research Observatory, bringing real astronomical research into the middle school classroom. Students in 6th through 8th grades will use professional-grade imaging and data collection equipment to plan observations, collect real astronomical data and analyze results using scientific software. Working in teams, students will investigate nebulae, star clusters and galaxies while developing skills in data analysis, problem solving and computational thinking. This project provides direct access to real scientific tools and authentic research experiences. According to Martell, approximately 75 to 90 students each year will participate. The proposed equipment expands capacity, allowing multiple groups to conduct investigations simultaneously and engage more deeply in sustained scientific work. Students will present findings through reports and visual portfolios, culminating in a community research night. Martell will use the Voya grant to purchase a cooled astronomy camera for expanded student data collection, adapters and mounting accessories.
