Thomas Porton

Bronx, NY
James Monroe High School
Porton's project, the AIDS VAN, was a unique approach to HIV/AIDS peer education for teenagers. High school students were trained as peer educators. Using Porton's own mini-van and student-created informational materials, the students provided outreach to people throughout the community. Porter's AIDS VAN has won several awards, including the Mayor's Youth Volunteer Service Award and the 1995 Caring Institute Award.
