Domagala’s innovative teaching idea, “Give Out Books Part 3,” focuses on teaching third graders real-life financial and leadership skills by running a school store within the elementary school, with profits from the store used to support school-wide community activities. For example, students will work together to order books to donate to local daycare providers. Profits will also be used to buy books that will be brought to local neighborhoods by the Lake Superior school staff to be put in the reading mailboxes. Many of the students’ families do not use the public city library, and the school library has not been open due to COVID-19 restrictions. Domagala hopes giving out books to local daycare providers and stocking our reading mailboxes in the community will help meet this literacy challenge.
