Matthew Wilson

Wilson’s innovative teaching project, “Introduction to Encaustics,” will expose students to the captivating ancient art form that involves using heated beeswax mixed with pigment to create works of art with rich texture, vibrant colors and has a wide range of artistic possibilities. According to Wilson, encaustic painting encourages problem-solving, experimentation and hands-on learning, all of which align with the school’s goal of providing a well-rounded, engaging education. It challenges students to push boundaries while giving them the freedom to explore new textures, layering techniques and even mixed media art. Wilson believes this opportunity will not only enhance their technical abilities, but will also allow them to discover a medium that many students may not encounter outside of a specialized classroom. The Voya grant will be used to purchase equipment and materials to begin an encaustics unit in Chenango Valley High School’s art room. Wilson hopes that the introduction of this unique artform will foster both the students’ artistic skills and passion for the arts.
