Margie Suder

Suder’s innovative teaching idea, “EMT – Mock Accident,” is designed to introduce students to and prepare for careers in the health sciences. Students at East Fairmont Middle School’s STEAM Center will be engaged in a Problem-Based Learning Unit where they will take on the role of first responders. The first full day, students will be trained in basic first aid including burns, choking, bleeding, broken bones, shock, etc. They will also be trained on CPR and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator). Students will get a chance to practice these skills using CPR Manikins and Stop the Bleed kits. They will learn how to assess the scene and ask victims and witnesses questions about the situation and the injuries. After the students receive their training, they will be put into a variety of mock accident scenes, where they will have to be the first responders at the scene and administer first aid. Through this program, Suder hopes students will learn how to deal with these stressful situations and apply their skills, and ultimately discover if they have the right personality type to pursue a career in health sciences. The Voya grant will help purchase AED, Heimlich Maneuver and Stop the Bleed training kits.
