McKinley’s innovative teaching idea, “Inclusive Backpacking,” addresses two barriers that hinder students from participating in backpacking: the cost of backpacking equipment and students of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community feeling unwelcome or not safe. The project will focus on boosting the self-esteem and happiness in each student through a safe environment in nature where students can become confident to participate in a variety of outdoor recreation activities. Students will learn by interacting with peers to address challenges while expressing who they are. Supported by the Voya grant, this project will provide students with equipment to simulate backpacking in physical education classes and for their use on family backpacking trips. Students will go on camping trips to local state parks, meet people of diverse backgrounds, and join a community that supports participation and guidance in outdoor recreation.
