The team’s innovative teaching idea, “Wings and Wildlands,” is a year-long ornithology and sustainability project that will educate students about ornithology, the scientific study of birds, through direct observation, citizen science projects and habitat research. The curriculum combines scientific research, mathematical data analysis, sustainability practices and language arts while ensuring students meet the requirements for the Birds and Advanced Birds Pathfinder Honor. Through this hands-on project, citizen science participation and conservation efforts, students will develop a deep appreciation for birds and their habitats. The project includes engaging the school and community in long-term environmental sustainability efforts, including bird monitoring, habitat restoration and an awareness campaign. The students will also learn how to restore and protect open space habitats by planting native flora, reducing invasive species and creating bird-friendly environments. The Voya grant will help the team purchase binoculars, birdhouses and nesting platforms, native plants, bird field guides and ID posters.
