Heather Goodface-Ferguson

Goodface-Ferguson’s innovative teaching idea, the “Owi’chota” project, supports Native American students and families in the Sioux Falls School District through cultural activities that build life skills, support mental health and promote healthy living. Students and families will learn together while strengthening community ties. Families have requested cultural gatherings like an owi’chota, where, in Lakota culture, youth learn important life lessons from the Tiospaye (community). The events are designed to help students connect with positive role models and boost their self-efficacy and school connection by involving them in the planning process. Stakeholders, including staff, parents and students (grades eighth through 11th) will provide input through an online survey to determine which school shows the most interest and where to begin planning. According to Goodface-Ferguson, student engagement and participation is key to the project’s overall success. The Voya grant will be used to purchase refreshments, promotional items and pay for transportation and fees for cultural presenters.
