Webb’s innovative teaching program, the “Math Manipulative Project,” provides resources and technology for 5th and 6th grade students with disabilities that are served in Resource Math classes at Brown Intermediate school. According to Webb, five percent of students with disabilities perform at grade level or above in mathematics, while 95 percent of the students with disabilities perform below grade level in math and struggle to grasp math concepts. The project will incorporate technology and manipulatives such as the Touchjet Pond Projector, number lines, fraction tiles, arrays, 3D geometric figures, GeoMirrors, XY Coordinate Pegboards, and base blocks to support the learning of math concepts. The use of manipulatives, both virtual and hands-on, will help the students grasp an understanding of math concepts and will help the students achieve academic success. Ultimately, the project is an innovative way to help students with disabilities achieve greater success in math by providing both technology and hands-on learning materials to solidify understanding of math concepts.
