Dr. Jasmine Pielemeier, OT, and Lesley Rytel, SLP and AT Lead Inclusive Education, Assistive Technology Team

Pielemeier’s and Rytel’s innovative teaching idea, “Core Words Everywhere,” involves placing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) into everyday materials and spaces to foster inclusive environments where every voice is valued. For many students with disabilities, access to communication throughout their school day depends on tools like AAC. AAC includes systems of visual symbols that support those who have limited verbal speech. According to the teaching duo, these systems help students express needs, participate in learning and build relationships — but only when used consistently across settings. This project embeds core vocabulary and symbols from AAC systems into everyday tools, such as puzzles and playground signs, to create visual supports that are easy to use even when staff time is limited. These tools will provide students with access to language all day while helping teachers model AAC in natural routines, not just during therapy. Visual supports also benefit multilingual learners and students in general education. The Voya grant will help pay for playground signs, Core Word calendars, puzzles and playing cards.
