The team’s innovative teaching idea, “Math Bootcamp Academy (MBA),” is a multi-faceted program that is designed to increase student engagement, simplify complex math content, and model acceptable responses on a teacher-made test or in a district common assessment. According to the educators, the main goal of the program is to assist 8th graders — inclusive of special education students — in becoming fluent in the basic skills needed to be proficient in math standards for their grade level. Reflecting the school district’s motto — Engage, educate and empower every student, everyday — the project aims to engage students by using board games that specifically relate to the math content being taught. In a class setting, students will play the games to review a topic before a major exam, either in small groups with those who struggle with math concepts or one-on-one.
