Bradley Cook

Cook’s innovative teaching idea, “Visualize & Apply Math for Kids in Special Education,” is designed to empower special education students who are grade levels behind in math by combining NCTM visual math principles, metacognitive strategies and innovative mixed reality (MR) technology. The Voya grant will help Cook purchase the immersive MR headsets, allowing students to visualize 3D math concepts and apply them in real-world scenarios, such as measuring spaces or working with fractions. The project also incorporates hands-on manipulatives, personalized lessons tailored to IEPs (individual education plans), and math journals for reflection and goal setting. Cook believes that by focusing on both skill acquisition and cognitive development, this initiative addresses learning gaps, builds confidence, prepares students for future academic and real-world challenges, and ultimately transforms their relationship with math.
