Conger’s innovative teaching project, “Strengthening the Well-Being of Our Community,” will be guided by CREW (Community, Relationships, Engagement, Well-Being), a student-led initiative at Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School aimed at strengthening connections between the school and the Essex Junction community. Through a six-month research project, the 7th- and 8th-grade students identified tree planting as an important way to promote environmental sustainability and community well-being. Through this project, students will collaborate with local businesses and residents to select planting sites, develop action plans and navigate challenges. This hands-on project will enhance the students’ leadership, communication and problem-solving skills while improving the town’s aesthetics and environmental health for years to come. The Voya grant will help Conger purchase 12 Sugar Maple trees, soil and six long-handled shovels.
