Voya Recognizes ‘100 Best W!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance’

Monday, April 27, 2020

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Voya Financial, Inc. (NYSE: VOYA), has announced that its nonprofit collaborator Working in Support of Education (W!se) has released its ranking of the 2020 “100 Best W!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance.”

The first place distinction was given to Hurley High School in Virginia, while The High School for Math, Science & Engineering in New York City placed second and taking third Virginia’s Richmond Community High School. Amid social distancing orders throughout the country, the top ranking schools were honored during a virtual awards ceremony on April 27, which was sponsored by Voya.

The “100 Best” recognized as the first and only national ranking in the field of personal finance education. Offered in 49 states, participating schools teach a course or unit on personal finance and then administer W!se’s national, standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test. Ninety one percent of students in the 2020 100 Best Schools ranking earned W!se’s Financial Literacy Certification based on their coursework throughout the year and their performance on W!se’s Certification Test.

“Voya Foundation is proud to support organizations like W!se as they help to ensure students understand important financial principles,” said Angela Harrell, senior vice president, Chief Diversity & Corporate Responsibility Officer and Voya Foundation President. “Being financially literate is essential, and its importance is underscored during times of uncertainty such as our current economic environment. The skills learned through W!se’s programs helps prepare the leaders of tomorrow to weather storms to and through retirement.”

“We are excited to host this virtual ceremony that puts a spotlight on the right to financial education for all young people, and on the exceptional schools from 17 states who are the best in America fulfilling this mission,” said Phyllis Perillo, President and CEO of W!se.

Voya’s six-year relationship with W!se has supported programs that help to enhance students’ behavior regarding personal finance, with more students making smart financial decisions when it comes to budgeting, setting goals and establishing healthy savings. W!se’s award-winning Financial Literacy Certification program provides schools with the curriculum and resources to support their personal finance instruction and to measure students’ financial literacy when they take the Financial Literacy Certification Test. Students passing the test become Certified Financially Literate™ — a nationally recognized credential.
